Among the advanced Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) in service today are the Israeli-made Eitan and the Finnish-made Patria AMV XP, alongside other modern contenders such as the P2 Tiger (a collaboration between PT SSE of Indonesia and Texelis of France).
1. Israeli Eitan APC (8x8)
• Key Technology: Incorporates technology derived from the Merkava main battle tank and the Namer combat vehicle; equipped with the Rafael-developed Trophy active protection system (APS).
• Mobility & Engine: Powered by an MTU 6V890 turbo-diesel engine producing 750 hp. Maximum speed: 90 km/h.
• Protection: Features the Iron Fist Light Decoupled APS, capable of intercepting RPGs, anti-tank missiles, and kinetic energy projectiles via a radar-based detection system. Meets STANAG 4569 Level 4 standards, utilizing NERA (Non-Explosive Reactive Armor). The V-shaped hull is designed to withstand blasts equivalent to 10 kg of TNT.
• Capacity: Carries up to 12 personnel (9 soldiers plus crew).
> Primary Armament: Base APC variant: Samson Remote Weapon Station (RCWS) equipped with a 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
IFV variant: Turret-mounted 30 mm or 40 mm automatic cannon.
> Secondary Armament: 7.62 mm NATO pintle-mounted machine gun.
> Integrated with Spike anti-tank guided missile (ATGW) launchers (on the IFV variant).
2. Patria AMV XP (8x8)
• Origin: Finland (manufactured globally and under local license; notably used by Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force/JGSDF). • Advantages: Possesses a strong battle-proven track record in various extreme terrains (such as Afghanistan), a high-end independent suspension system, and modular ballistic protection that can be adapted to counter threats ranging from RPGs to modern landmines.
> Weapon Configuration: Highly modular. It can be equipped with medium-caliber weapon systems, direct-fire cannons up to 120 mm, or the Patria Nemo 120 mm dual-mortar system.
Secondary armament: A secondary Protector RWS (Remote Weapon Station) or anti-tank/anti-aircraft missiles.
> Supports the integration of various types of global Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs).
> Protection: Compatible with modern Active Defense Systems (ADS); features low-radar-emission technology and thermal-stealth sensors.
Rated at STANAG 4569 Level K5+ (exceptionally thick for a wheeled vehicle). Mine protection exceeds Level 4a/4b; includes IED resistance and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) defense.
> Engine: Scania diesel engine producing 603 hp (450 kW). Maximum speed: >100 km/h (includes amphibious capability at 6–10 km/h).
> Personnel Capacity: Up to 12–13 individuals, depending on the weapon turret configuration and internal module layout.
3. P2 Tiger (4x4) — A Collaborative Effort Between Indonesia and France
• Origin: Developed by PT Sentra Surya Ekajaya (PT SSE) in Tangerang, in partnership with Texelis (France).
• Protection & Weight: Weighs 18 tons with protection standards ranging from STANAG 4569 Level 2 to Level 4 (depending on the mission configuration). Utilizes a monocoque hull design based on French military protection standards. • Engine: 8.9L Cummins diesel engine producing 375 hp, paired with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. Maximum speed is approximately 100–110 km/h.
> Weapon configuration: Features an integrated tactical Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) capable of mounting machine guns ranging from 7.62 mm to 12.7 mm. It can also be configured as an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).
Secondary armament: Smoke grenade launchers for tactical defense and crew protection.
> Capacity: 10 personnel (2 primary crew members + up to 8 infantry troops).
Summary of Combat Characteristics
• The Eitan APC excels in active protection, particularly in urban environments; it was specifically designed based on the IDF’s intensive urban combat experience (utilizing the Iron Fist Active Protection System—APS—to neutralize RPGs before they strike the vehicle’s hull).
• The Patria AMV XP excels in terms of firepower modularity. This combat vehicle can be rapidly reconfigured for different roles, including as a mobile artillery system, thanks to its capacity to support heavy turrets—such as the 120 mm Nemo rapid-fire mortar system.
• The P2 Tiger (by PT SSE) excels in rapid tactical mobility (interoperability). With a weight of 18 tons and a 4x4 configuration, it is highly agile, allowing it to navigate narrow roads or cross light-duty bridges. Furthermore, two P2 Tiger units can be loaded simultaneously into an Airbus A400M military transport aircraft for rapid aerial deployment.
