The first terrorist incident in Indonesian aviation history

 On March 28, 1981, the first terrorist incident in Indonesian aviation history occurred, involving Garuda Indonesia flight GA-206 from Jakarta to Medan. It transited in Palembang before being hijacked mid-air and ultimately landed in Bangkok, Thailand. The aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 named "Woyla."


The hijacking was carried out by five armed men from an extremist group calling themselves "Komando Jihad" (or members of Jamaah Imran).

The perpetrators forced the plane to divert to Penang, Malaysia, and then to Bangkok, Thailand. They demanded the release of 80 political prisoners, a ransom of US$1.5 million, the expulsion of Israeli citizens from Indonesia, and the removal of Vice President Adam Malik.

The hijacking drama lasted for 65 hours before finally being quelled by a lightning raid by Kopassandha (now Kopassus) special forces at Don Muang Airport, Bangkok, on March 31, 1981.


The Kopasandha troops employed a highly planned lightning raid strategy to free the hostages (48 passengers and 5 cabin crew).

The troops approached the plane at 2:45 a.m. under cover of darkness to avoid detection by the hijackers.

The team divided into small groups to attack from three entry points simultaneously to break up the hijackers' concentration.

Emergency Door (center, above the wings): Using the emergency stairs for quick entry.

Rear Door: Attacking through the rear of the aircraft.

Front Door/Pilot: Ensuring immediate control of the cockpit area.

The troops used special tools to forcefully and quickly break through the aircraft doors to surprise the hijackers.

Immediately upon entry, the troops shouted instructions for all passengers to lie on the floor of the aircraft. This was done to separate the hostages from the hijackers, who remained standing or wielding weapons.


The entire operation to neutralize the hijackers was carried out in a very short time, approximately 2 minutes and 49 seconds. This decisiveness and speed prevented the hijackers from detonating grenades or killing more hostages.

This operation resulted in two fatalities from the assault team: Lieutenant (posthumously) Achmad Kirang and Captain Herman Rante.


There were no passenger fatalities during the rescue operation.

Legendary German Machine Gun - MG42

 The MG 42 (German: Maschinengewehr 42) was a German-made general-purpose machine gun renowned for its extremely high rate of fire, reliability, and cost-effectiveness during World War II. It was nicknamed "Hitler's Buzzsaw" by Allied forces due to its unique and deadly sound.


Key Characteristics

Rate of Fire: The MG 42 had an exceptionally high cyclic rate of fire, averaging around 1,200 to 1,500 rounds per minute (some sources even mention up to 1,800 rounds per minute), significantly faster than other machine guns of the time, such as the MG 34 (850 rounds per minute).


Caliber: Originally designed to use the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge, postwar versions were later modified to use the standard 7.62mm NATO ammunition when West Germany joined NATO.

Operating System: This weapon uses a short-recoil, air-cooled mechanism.

Quick Barrel Change: One drawback of its high rate of fire is that the barrel heats up quickly after about 150 consecutive rounds. However, its design allows the operator to quickly change the hot barrel through a side door, an efficient design feature on the battlefield.


Usage: The MG 42 is a general-purpose machine gun, meaning it can be used as a light machine gun with a bipod or as a heavy machine gun mounted on a tripod for defensive purposes.

Postwar Influence

The MG 42 is considered by many experts to be one of the finest machine guns ever made, and its design was so successful that many of its elements were adopted into postwar machine gun designs.




 Postwar variants, such as the German MG 3, are still used by many militaries around the world today, demonstrating the superiority of the original design.

T-54/55 - Immortal tank of the Soviet Union

 The T-54/55 series tank holds the record for the most mass-produced tank in military automotive history, with production estimates reaching between 96,500 and 100,000 units. It was designed as a simple, inexpensive, and highly lethal weapon for its time.


1. Brief History

The T-54 was developed by the Soviet Union immediately after the end of World War II (the first prototype appeared in March 1945) to replace the T-34.

T-54 (1947): An early variant that introduced the egg-shaped turret design.

T-55 (1958): An improvement on the T-54 with added nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection and a more powerful engine.

Legacy: Due to its highly maintainable design, the tank remains in active service with over 50 countries as of 2026, including in the modern conflict in Ukraine as a mobile artillery piece.


2. Design and Philosophy

The T-54/55's design philosophy is effective minimalism.

Very Low Profile: At only 2.4 meters tall, this tank was much shorter than its Western competitors like the M48 Patton, making it difficult to detect and shoot down on the battlefield.

Rounded Turret: The steeply curved turret design was designed to deflect enemy shells.

Ease of Manufacture: Designed for mass production by standard equipment factories, without requiring overly complex technology.

4. Key Differences between the T-54 and T-55

Although they look identical, they have minor physical differences:

The T-54 has a mushroom-shaped vent on the right side of the turret and a machine gun mounted on the front of the hull. T-55: Removed the mushroom vents to improve NBC protection and boasted a more powerful engine (580 HP vs. 520 HP on the T-54).


By 2026, many T-55s had received "deep upgrade" modernizations, such as the Ukrainian M-55S variant, which features a 105mm NATO cannon and a digital fire control system, proving that this basic 1950s-era design still has utility on the modern battlefield.

RAH-66 Comanche - Stealth Helicopter

 The RAH-66 Comanche is an advanced stealth attack helicopter developed by Boeing-Sikorsky for the US Army. It features a futuristic design, stealth technology to avoid radar, and high maneuverability for attack/reconnaissance missions. However, the program was canceled in 2004 due to high costs and the emergence of drones, although two prototypes are now in museums.


Design, Sensors, and Weaponry

Stealth Helicopter: Designed to reduce radar signature and noise, making it difficult for enemies to detect.

Flexible: Capable of both attack (destroying targets) and reconnaissance (finding and designating targets for the AH-64 Apache).

Advanced: Incorporates unprecedented stealth aircraft technology, such as an angular shape and special rotor blades to reduce noise.


Shape and Material: The angular body shape and special materials minimize radar reflection.

Propeller: Has a multi-blade rotor with a special shroud to reduce the helicopter's characteristic "whoop-whoop" sound.

Advanced Sensors: Equipped with advanced sensors for reconnaissance and target identification.

Armament: Designed to carry missiles and rockets to destroy armored vehicles.

Why was the program canceled?

High Cost: The program consumed billions of dollars before mass production began.



Changing Military Needs: The U.S. Army shifted its focus to improving existing helicopters and developing drones.

Emerging drone technology was seen as being able to fulfill some of the Comanche's roles more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The RAH-66 program was officially terminated in 2004.

The two successful prototypes are now on display in military museums.

The Cheyenne, the Forerunner of the Apache Attack Helicopter....

The Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne was an experimental attack helicopter developed by Lockheed for the United States Army in the late 1960s. It was designed as a futuristic attack helicopter, combining the speed of a jet aircraft with the maneuverability of a helicopter through a "compound helicopter" system.


Design: It featured stub wings, a rigid rotor, and a pusher propeller on the tail, allowing it to reach very high speeds of over 400 km/h.

Armament: It was equipped with a 30mm cannon under its nose that could rotate 360 ​​degrees, a 40mm grenade launcher or a 7.62mm machine gun, and was capable of carrying TOW anti-tank missiles.


Technology Ahead of Its Time: The Cheyenne already had a digital fire control system, a laser rangefinder, and a thermal sensor, which were highly innovative for the 1960s.

Program Cancellation: Despite its technological advancements, the program was canceled in 1972 due to various technical issues (including a fatal test accident that resulted in the death of Lockheed test pilot David A. Beil), cost overruns, and budgetary disputes between the US Army and Air Force.


The failure of the Cheyenne paved the way for the development of the AH-64 Apache, which incorporated many of the design lessons and weapons systems tested on the Cheyenne.

More recently, in late 2025, the AH-56 Cheyenne has been rediscovered as a squadron vehicle in the popular military simulation game, War Thunder.



The HAL Tejas Mk2 - Indian-made 4.5-generation light multirole fighter aircraft

 The HAL Tejas Mk2 is an Indian-made 4.5-generation light multirole fighter aircraft, a further development of the Tejas Mk1. It has been upgraded to Medium Weight Fighter (MWF) status with a larger design, more powerful engines (GE F414), improved aerodynamics (canards), advanced sensors (IRST, AESA Radar), and a higher payload for a wider range of missions, replacing legacy aircraft such as the Jaguar and Mirage 2000.


Key Differences with the Tejas Mk1:

Size & Class: Upgraded from LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) to MWF (Medium Weight Fighter) with a longer fuselage and larger wingspan.

Aerodynamics: Equipped with canards (small fins at the front) for more agile maneuverability and improved lift.


Engine: Uses a significantly more powerful GE F414 engine (approximately 98 kN) than the F404 engine on the Mk1.

Sensors: Adoption of advanced IRST (Infrared Search and Track) sensors and AESA radar.

Mission Capabilities: Increased fuel capacity, higher payload capacity, and longer mission duration.


Status and Development:

Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

It is intended to replace several aging fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF).


The maiden flight of the Tejas Mk2 prototype is scheduled for June 2026, with mass production scheduled to begin around 2027–2028, with induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) planned for 2029.

Overall, the Tejas Mk2 represents a major leap forward in India's aerospace capabilities, offering significant improvements over the Tejas Mk1.

A comparison of military strength between the United States and Denmark in early 2026 shows a significant difference in capacity. The United States remains the world's strongest military, while Denmark is a smaller regional power but possesses advanced technology through the NATO alliance.

AH-64 Apache competitor...China Z-10

 

The Z-10 is a Chinese-made multi-role attack helicopter, the first pure attack helicopter from China, developed by Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation (CAIC) for the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The helicopter has been in production since 2003, but entered service with the Chinese military in 2009/2010. Designed for ground combat missions, it is capable of carrying anti-tank missiles, rockets, and cannons, and has day and night combat capabilities. The latest export variant, the Z-10ME, features enhancements such as an infrared suppressor system and additional armor to enhance missile survivability. It has also been ordered and is operated by the Pakistan Army.

The Z-10 has a conventional attack helicopter configuration with a narrow fuselage and a double-decker tandem cockpit, with the gunner at the front and the pilot at the rear. The Z-10 is equipped with a variety of weapons mounted on four hardpoints on the stub wings and a chin-mounted gun turret.


Main Armament: Chin-Mounted Cannon: A chin-mounted turret can be armed with a 23mm PX-10A or 30mm automatic cannon. Anti-Tank Missiles (ATGM) The HJ-10 (Hong Jian-10) missile, which is comparable to the US AGM-114 Hellfire missile. Export variants use names such as AKD-10, CM-502KG, or CM-501GA. Electronic Countermeasures (ECM): The helicopter has a chaff/flare dispenser to deter incoming missiles, as well as an infrared jammer.
