This is the world's largest bombers today - Tupolev Tu-160

Currently, the world's largest operational bomber is the Tupolev Tu-160 (NATO reporting name: Blackjack, Russian nickname: "White Swan"). This Soviet-made supersonic military aircraft has a length of 54.1 meters and a maximum takeoff weight of 275 tons.


Tu-160 Specifications and Advantages

Dimensions: Length 54.1 meters, maximum wingspan of 55.7 meters.

Weight: Empty weight approximately 110 tons and maximum takeoff weight of 275 tons.

Speed: Capable of supersonic speeds above Mach 2 (over 2,000 km/h), making it the fastest bomber currently in service.

Weapons Capacity: Capable of carrying up to 40 tons of weapons in its bomb bay, including nuclear-armed cruise missiles.

Compared to American air giants like the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, which has a speed of Mach 0.86, a takeoff weight of 220 tons, and a payload capacity of 31.5 tons, the Tupolev Tu-160 was developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s in response to the United States' strategic bomber project, the B-1A Lancer. The Soviet Union needed a long-range, nuclear-capable supersonic bomber capable of penetrating enemy air defenses at high speed.

1. Design Competition (1967–1972)

The project began with a supersonic strategic bomber competition in 1967. The Tupolev Design Bureau competed closely against Myasishchev (designing the M-18) and Sukhoi (designing the T-4). Although Myasishchev's design was considered excellent, the Soviet government awarded the design to the Tupolev Design Bureau because they were considered to have the best technical and manufacturing capabilities. Full development was under the close supervision of legendary engineer Valentin Bliznyuk.

2. First Flight and Operations (1981–1994)

The first prototype successfully made its maiden flight on December 18, 1981. Mass production was approved in 1984 at the Kazan Aviation Plant (KAPO). It entered active service with the Soviet Air Force in April 1987. After a total of 36 units were produced, construction was temporarily halted in 1994 due to the post-Soviet economic crisis.

3. Impact of the Collapse of the Soviet Union

When the Soviet Union dissolved, the Tu-160 fleet was divided between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine inherited 19 Tu-160s, but unable to finance their operation, it destroyed some of them and returned eight to Russia in exchange for gas debt repayment.

4. Modern Revival (Tu-160M)

In 2015, the Russian Ministry of Defense decided to revive the mass production line of this bomber. The deeply modernized variant, codenamed Tu-160M/M2, successfully made its maiden flight in early 2022. This new version is equipped with more fuel-efficient NK-32-02 engines, fully digital avionics, advanced radar, and a new electronic defense system to face modern warfare.

The following is a list of important missions that have been and are routinely carried out by the Tu-160 fleet: 

1. Combat Deployments Military Intervention in Syria (November 2015): This was the first combat debut in the history of the Tu-160. A Tu-160 squadron flew directly from a base in Russia to launch Kh-101 stand-off cruise missiles. These missiles successfully destroyed various strategic targets of militant groups, such as command centers and weapons depots in Idlib and Aleppo. 

Russia-Ukraine War: Russia began actively deploying its Tu-160 bomber fleet to launch waves of long-range cruise missiles. Intensive deployments were recorded in Russia's strategic counteroffensive to destroy military and energy infrastructure targets deep inside Ukraine. 

2. Long-Range Patrol Missions & Show of ForceArctic and North Sea Patrols: Tu-160 squadrons routinely conduct marathon flights in international neutral zones such as over the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Arctic region. These flights often last up to 16 hours non-stop with simulated mid-air refueling and escort by MiG-31 fighter jets. 

Transatlantic Flights to Venezuela (2008 & 2018): To assert its global influence, Russia once flew a pair of Tu-160s across the Atlantic Ocean to Venezuela. These long-range missions involved joint exercises in the Caribbean, right in the United States' backyard.

3. Aviation World Record-BreakingLongest Flight Record (2020): Two Tu-160 crew members set a world record for the longest non-stop flight for a supersonic bomber. They flew non-stop for 25 hours, covering more than 20,000 kilometers over international ocean before returning to base

The Formidable Weaponry of The Indonesian Air Force's (TNI-AU) Rafale fighter jets

The Indonesian Air Force's (TNI-AU) Rafale fighter jets can carry a variety of advanced weaponry, including Meteor missiles, AASM Hammer smart bombs, and the internal GIAT 30 cannon. This comprehensive weapons package was procured alongside the contract for the Rafale jets themselves. The government has officially showcased and handed over this modern weaponry to the Indonesian Air Force during a defense equipment handover ceremony.

- Meteor Missile (Air-to-Air):

The Meteor missile is currently the world's most lethal Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), manufactured by MBDA (a European consortium).

Key Advantages of the Meteor Missile:

High-Speed ​​Aerial "Sniper": Capable of reaching speeds of Mach 4 (nearly 5,000 km/h) to intercept enemy aircraft from extreme distances.

Extreme Range: Boasts an operational firing range of 100–200 kilometers, allowing Rafale pilots to engage enemies beyond visual range.

Smart Ramjet Engine: Unlike conventional missiles that run out of fuel as they approach their target, the Meteor's ramjet engine provides constant thrust throughout the entire flight.

No-Escape Zone: Features the largest "no-escape zone" radius in its class (approximately 60 km), making it extremely difficult for enemy aircraft to evade, even with extreme maneuvering. The acquisition of this weapon is highly exclusive, as not all nations purchasing the Rafale are granted permission by the European manufacturer to possess this active radar-guided missile.

Indonesia has officially secured this long-range Beyond Visual Range (BVR) strike missile. The addition of the Meteor missile positions Indonesia as one of the fighter jet operators with the most lethal long-range air combat capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. 


- AASM Hammer Smart Bomb (Air-to-Ground):

The AASM Hammer is a modular, precision-guided smart bomb system manufactured by the French company Safran Electronics & Defense.

Key Features and Advantages of the AASM Hammer:

Hybrid Guidance System: Utilizes a sophisticated combination of GPS and INS (Inertial Navigation System). Advanced variants can be equipped with infrared sensors (for stationary targets like buildings or bridges) or laser sensors to engage moving targets such as combat vehicles.

Standoff Strike Capability: Equipped with a small rocket booster (range extension kit) and additional wings, the system boasts an operational range exceeding 60–70 km. Rafale pilots can release the bomb from a safe distance without entering the range of enemy radar or air defenses.

Launch Flexibility: Remarkably, the bomb can be released from very low altitudes or over rugged, hilly terrain, yet still climb and glide with precision toward the target.

High Payload Capacity: A single Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) Rafale fighter jet can carry up to six AASM Hammer bombs during a single tactical mission.

The variant officially acquired by the TNI-AU is the AASM-250 Hammer. This variant utilizes the standard NATO MK82 conventional bomb warhead, weighing approximately 250 kg (500 lbs). Notably, through a Technology Transfer (ToT) program, the Ministry of Defence has established a partnership to enable partial production of these smart bombs in Indonesia. PT Pindad is slated to manufacture the bomb bodies and handle explosive filling, while Safran (France) supplies the smart guidance and control systems. 


- GIAT 30 Internal Cannon:

A 30mm caliber automatic cannon manufactured by Nexter (formerly GIAT Industries), France.

This cannon is specifically designed for close-range air combat (dogfighting) and high-speed tactical ground attacks.

The weapon is directly integrated into the airframe of every F4-standard Rafale aircraft.

Exceptional Rate of Fire: Capable of firing 2,500 rounds per minute. This extreme speed is crucial in modern air combat, as the firing window against a rapidly maneuvering enemy aircraft typically lasts less than one second. High Projectile Velocity: Projectiles travel at a muzzle velocity of 1,025 meters per second (exceeding Mach 3), ensuring high penetration power and accuracy. Ammunition Capacity: The Rafale carries 125 rounds of 30 × 150 mm ammunition. Although the quantity may seem modest, the rate of fire is optimized for short bursts—lasting approximately 0.5 to 1 second—which are highly lethal. Maximum Destructive Power: Uses Armor-Piercing Incendiary (API) or High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) ammunition. 

A single hit or two from these large-caliber rounds is sufficient to destroy an enemy fighter jet or tear through light armored vehicles on the ground. Electric System Advantage: Unlike American fighter jet cannons (such as the M61 Vulcan) that utilize a rotating barrel system (Gatling gun), the GIAT 30 employs an electrically driven, single-barrel revolver system. This design eliminates the need for a barrel spin-up or "warm-up" period, allowing the first round to be fired instantly.

The KJ-2000 - Mainring

 The KJ-2000 (NATO reporting name: Mainring) is a second-generation airborne early warning and control (AEW&C/AWACS) aircraft developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It serves as a strategic "eye in the sky" to detect enemy targets and coordinate fighter jets on the battlefield.


Key points about the KJ-2000 military aircraft are as follows:

Development & Airframe

Il-76 Base: The KJ-2000 is built using a modified airframe from the Russian Ilyushin Il-76 heavy transport aircraft.

Quantity Limitations: Due to its heavy reliance on the supply of Il-76 airframes from Russia, the number of KJ-2000s produced is very limited (estimated at only 4-5 units).

Maiden Flight: The aircraft successfully made its maiden flight in 2003.


Radar System & Capabilities

Fixed AESA Radar: Unlike Western AWACS aircraft (such as the E-3 Sentry) whose radar dishes rotate, the circular radome atop the KJ-2000 is static (non-rotating). It houses three Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antennas arranged in a triangle to provide full 360-degree radar coverage.

Detection Range: This radar system, designed by NRIET (Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology), is capable of tracking airborne targets up to a maximum range of 470 kilometers.

Multi-Target: The KJ-2000 is capable of simultaneously tracking and following dozens to hundreds of targets in the air, including detecting low-flying cruise missile threats.


Successors to the KJ-2000

Due to supply constraints on large commercial airframes from abroad, China subsequently developed new early warning aircraft variants based on domestically designed aircraft, such as the KJ-500 (based on the Shaanxi Y-9) and the KJ-600 for carrier operations.
