CURRENT STATE-OF-THE-ART SMART BOMBS

The most advanced and lethal smart bombs (Precision-Guided Munitions) in the world today are the US-made GBU-53/B StormBreaker (by Raytheon) and the French-made AASM Hammer (by Safran). These two munitions lead the field in global technology; rather than relying solely on standard GPS—which is susceptible to jamming—they utilize tri-mode seeker systems and specialized propulsion motors. Below is a list of the world's most advanced smart bombs and their status in Indonesia:

GBU-53/B

1. GBU-53/B StormBreaker (United States) – Smartest & Multi-Sensor.

This compact bomb represents the pinnacle of smart bomb technology, featuring a tri-mode seeker within a single warhead. Technology: Combines Millimeter-Wave Radar (detecting targets through storms or smoke), Imaging Infrared (visually distinguishing targets), and Semi-Active Laser guidance. Advantages: Capable of tracking and striking fast-moving targets even in extreme weather conditions. Its compact size allows stealth fighters like the F-35 to carry large numbers of these bombs in their internal weapon bays.

AASM Hammer

2. AASM Hammer (France) – Rocket-Propelled Smart Bomb.

The AASM Hammer is a modular smart kit that transforms "dumb" bombs into long-range smart munitions. This weapon has garnered global attention due to its cutting-edge performance on various battlefields. Technology: Uses a combination of INS/GPS guidance augmented by Infrared (IR) or Laser sensors. Advantages: Features a rocket booster motor at the rear. Fighter jets can release the bomb from a safe standoff distance of up to 70 kilometers, even at low altitudes or extreme (off-axis) angles. Indonesian Context: The 250 kg version of the AASM Hammer smart bomb has officially entered service with the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) alongside the arrival of the Dassault Rafale fighter jet fleet.

GBU-57A/B MOP

3. GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) – The Ultimate Bunker Buster.

If the benchmark is the size and penetration capability against underground facilities, the Boeing-made GBU-57 MOP reigns supreme. Specifications: It boasts a massive weight of 13.6 tons. Key Features: Guided by advanced GPS and equipped with a smart fuse system, the bomb can calculate the layers of concrete flooring before detonating precisely at the heart of a nuclear facility or a deeply buried underground bunker.

Domestic Smart Bomb Innovation (Indonesia).
Indonesia, through its domestic defense industry, has also successfully developed smart bomb technology independently:

B250ST

B250ST (Smart Kit): A collaborative product between PT Sari Bahari and a strategic partner from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This device is a smart kit (comprising flight wings and a guidance unit) attached to a standard 250 kg bomb, enabling it to glide up to 50 km with high precision. Notably, the system is designed to be compatible with both NATO-standard fighter jets (such as the F-16) and Russian-standard aircraft (such as the Sukhoi).
